For us, it’s always been important to understand, and be transparent about where our food comes from. By selecting The Jolly Hog products, you can be sure that you’re not just getting great tasting products, but also ensuring that the pigs were reared using higher welfare standards.

Outdoor Bred Pork
Here at The Jolly Hog, you’ll hear us using the term ‘outdoor bred’ a fair bit. We know that all of the various standards and marques can be confusing, it is a real problem. So what does ‘Outdoor Bred’ actually mean? It’s a method of rearing the pigs, where they spend the beginning of their lives outside. When they are weaned, they are brought inside to airy, spacious, straw bedded barns.
All of our pork comes from British, outdoor bred & RSPCA assured farms – something that’s very important to us.
RSPCA Assured
As well as outdoor bred, we only source our meat from RSPCA Assured farms. This scheme means we can be confident of the skill and ability of the farmers, as well as the respect for the animals. On RSPCA Assured farms, the use of farrowing crates is strictly prohibited.
Farrowing crates prevent pregnant sows from being able to turn around and often inhibit them from building nests. Around 58% of sows in the UK give birth in farrowing crates. This is a major concern for the RSPCA and something which will never be permitted on RSPCA Assured farms where our RSPCA Assured sausages and bacon comes from.
